An event to mark Lake Boga being dry for the first time in 100 years is being supported with a $4450 Victorian Government grant announced today by the Member for Northern Victoria Region, Candy Broad.
Ms Broad said the funding for The Greatest Dry Lake Bed Dinner on 4 April would be provided to Swan Hill Rural City Council.
“The festivities will commence with a fully supervised Walk across the dry Lake Boga,” Ms Broad said.
After the walk, all participants will receive an authenticated certificate to recognise their completed walk across Lake Boga when it was dry for the first time in 100 years.
“That night, residents and community groups will participate in a BYO dinner, to be held around the Lake Boga foreshore.
“The event will encourage people from around the district to get together and celebrate the achievements of the town in an enjoyable and social atmosphere.
“Later in the night a fireworks display will take place on the foreshore to celebrate the community’s achievements and conclude the day.”
Ms Broad said The Greatest Dry Lake Bed Dinner and walk across Lake Boga would become signature events for the community and would demonstrate the resilience of residents towards such adverse drought conditions.
“This exciting new event will help encourage people from all over Victoria to come and participate, providing great potential to lift business growth in the town,” Ms Broad said.
“Visitors to the event will be encouraged to sample all that the district has to offer and they will no doubt be impressed by the vast amount of services and attractions the region provides,” Ms Broad said.
Regional and Rural Development Minister, Jacinta Allan said funding for The Greatest Dry Lake Bed Dinner would be provided through the Regional Development Victoria’s Provincial Victoria Local Events Program.
“The Provincial Victoria Local Events Program is part of Moving Forward, the Government’s $502 million plan to make Provincial Victoria the best place to live, work, invest and raise a family,” Ms Allan said.
“The Brumby Labor Government is committed to working in partnership with local councils and communities to drive new growth and investment opportunities across provincial Victoria.”
