Funding Boost For Birchip Community Centre Study

Posted
26 August 2009

Residents in Birchip and the surrounding district can have a say on what they’d like in a proposed community centre.

Member for Northern Victoria Region, Candy Broad said the Brumby Labor Government had provided $30,000 to community group Birchip Cropping Group to employ a consultant to conduct a feasibility study into a new centre.

“The Brumby Labor Government is taking action to provide even better community facilities for regional Victoria by providing support to undertake a study into what local people would want in a new centre,” Ms Broad said.

“A consultant will talk to local people to identify who might use the facility, how it would be used, and the costs involved, as well as drafting designs.

“Residents, local businesses and community organisations are looking for space to meet, conduct videoconferences, or enjoy community celebrations so I encourage people to get involved and make their voices heard.

“By getting involved in the planning stages, local people will be able to make new connections with others and develop their leadership skills.”

Birchip Cropping Group will contribute $10,000, Woods Bagot Architects will contribute $5000
in-kind toward concept design development.  Birchip Cropping Group will manage the study and work with local groups, the Birchip P-12 College, Buloke Shire Council and East Wimmera Health Service on the study.

Community Development Minister Peter Batchelor said the Birchip multipurpose community facility study was one of four projects to share in more than $100,000 in the Brumby Labor Government’s current round of Victorian Community Support Grants.

“Residents in Birchip have a great opportunity to get involved and help deliver a much-needed facility for their community and the Brumby Labor Government is pleased to support them to achieve their goals,” Mr Batchelor said.

Since 2004, the Victorian Community Support Grants program has supported 504 projects worth almost $83 million.
