Children’s Week Starts With Melbourne Zoo Festivities

Posted
25 October 2009

Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development Maxine Morand has launched the 2009 Children’s Week amid a spectacle of activities and entertainment.

Ms Morand said the Melbourne Zoo celebrations were the start of a week-long festival of fun for Victorian children and their families.

“The Brumby Labor Government is proud to support this annual event, which is an opportunity for Victorian families to celebrate children and recognise their talents, skills and abilities,” she said.

“It’s a great way for the community to formally recognise the most precious members our community – our children.”

he Brumby Government provided more than $70,000 in grants to local councils and community organisations to hold special events and activities during Children’s Week. About 150 free events will be held across the state.

The Melbourne Zoo event is free for all children aged under 15 and has something for all ages, from tai chi, ‘Go for your life’ activities and crafty animal fun to face painting, Chinese lantern and wacky musical instrument workshops.

The Wonderful World of Mr Men and Little Miss and Blinky Bill headline the entertainment, while children can learn to juggle, practise the hula hoop and spin some plates at the Circus Manipulation Workshop.

“Victorian families can join in the celebrations today and throughout Children’s Week with hundreds of free events planned across the state,” Ms Morand said.

“This is an exciting opportunity to celebrate the importance of childhood and the significance of a child’s early learning experiences.”

Ms Morand said the Brumby Labor Government’s support for Children’s Week was part of an ongoing commitment to give all Victorian children the best possible start in life.

“We are improving kindergarten quality and access, strengthening our focus on early intervention services for children with additional needs, co-locating essential children’s services with schools and ensuring parents are even better informed about their child’s progress through transition statements before starting school,” Ms Morand said.
