Upgraded Sports Facilities In Shepparton

Posted
8 October 2009

Residents of south east Shepparton are celebrating today following the opening of brand new sporting facilities at McGuire College, Wilmot Road Primary School and Vibert Reserve.

Visiting the site today, Candy Broad MP, Member for Northern Victoria Region, officially declared the McGuire College, Wilmot Road Primary School and Vibert Reserve Sports Facilities open, representing the Minister for Sport and Recreation, James Merlino MP.

The Brumby Labor Government contributed $450,000 in funding for the development of multi-sport playing surfaces and other sports facilities for community and school use at McGuire College, Wilmot Road and Vibert Reserve.

“The newly constructed hard courts at Vibert Reserve, school oval redevelopments and training-level flood lighting at the McGuire College oval will provide wonderful facilities for both students and members of the broader community, to get more actively involved in sport and recreation,” Ms Broad said.

“The multi purpose courts will provide opportunities for participation in netball, basketball, tennis and indoor soccer, and flood lighting at the oval will allow greater versatility of its use, such as for training after dark.”

“This redevelopment will allow local people to enjoy sport, get active, and develop a strong sense of community, and the works are particularly important given that McGuire College lacked netball and tennis facilities previously.”

Mr Merlino said the Brumby Labor Government was proud to provide high quality facilities for communities across Victoria.

“Quality, accessible community sport and recreation facilities play an important role in building stronger communities across the state,” he said.

“We are taking action to encourage Victorians to enjoy sport and recreation by providing funds for better facilities.”

Mr Merlino also acknowledged funding provided by Greater Shepparton City Council, the Federal Government and McGuire College towards this worthwhile project.

A number of school and local sports clubs are set to benefit from the new facilities, including McGuire College, Wilmot Road Primary School, Shepparton United Football Netball Club, Shepparton Football Netball club, McGuire Junior Football Club, McGuire College Soccer Club and the St Andrews Tennis Club.

The facilities will ensure there are a range of new sport and recreation opportunities for the local communities of south east Shepparton, and will help accommodate even more sport lovers and encourage increased involvement in sport and recreation across all sections of the community.
