$300,000 Puts Benalla Streets Ahead

Posted
26 October 2009

Infrastructure works to improve the safety, operation and appearance of two of Benalla’s major streets are proceeding with the help of a $300,000 grant from the Brumby Labor Government.

The partnership with Benalla Rural City Council will improve the amenity of Clarke and Thomas Streets when works are completed and provide up to 15 full-time jobs for the duration of the project.

Visiting Benalla today, the Member for Northern Victoria Region, Ms Broad said the operation and appearance of major streets can significantly affect quality of life for residents.

“The Brumby Labor Government is helping to improve the safety, operation and appearance of Clarke and Thomas Streets for residents and visitors to Benalla,” Ms Broad said.

Ms Broad said the works are providing employment opportunities for the local community and assisting farmers, contractors and tradespeople who have been hit by the drought.

“These projects are vital in supporting regional communities which are trying to keep moving forward despite being hit hard by the drought,” Ms Broad said.

“Benalla is attracting new lifestyle residents and it’s important to keep providing infrastructure to support this growth.”

The grant is through the Drought Initiative component of the Brumby Labor Government’s Small Towns Development Fund, which is helping small towns across rural and regional Victoria by creating jobs, driving economic growth and improving community infrastructure.
