Residents of Tungamah, Youarang, Katamatite, Muckatah and Cobram now have more reasons to get on the bus with the launch of a new trial service to run each Wednesday for the next year, thanks to a local project funded by the Brumby Labor Government.
Launching the trial service in Tungamah today, Member for Northern Victoria Region, Candy Broad said the new trial service was developed by the Goulburn Valley Transport Connections project to give local people better access to the services and activities in Cobram.
“The Wednesday bus service will give people better access to social opportunities and library and medical facilities available in Cobram,” Ms Broad said.
“At community forums, and through responses to community surveys, residents of Tungamah, Youarang, Katamatite and Muckatah said they want to access the services and facilities in Cobram and the message was heard loud and clear.
“Using a school bus that would usually sit idle during the day, passengers can now enjoy the Cobram library and other social and recreational facilities available in the nearby rural city.
“The Goulburn Valley Transport Connections project is helping make communities more liveable, by having local people develop their own transport solutions, using existing infrastructure,” she said.
“The service will also allow residents in the local townships to be better connected”.
The bus leaves the VLine bus stop in Tungamah at 9.05am and arrives in Cobram at 10.05am, via stops in Youarang, Katamatite and Muckatah. It departs Cobram for the return journey at 1.55pm and arrives back in Tungamah at 2.50pm.
Bookings are essential, and can be made by calling Cuss Bus Lines on 0408 388 316.
Community Development Minister, Peter Batchelor said the Brumby Labor Government had committed a further $80 million dollars to continue Transport Connections across the state.
“The Transport Connections Program makes a huge positive impact on communities, because access to local transport is a key factor in people being happy with where they choose to live,” Mr Batchelor said.
“This is a great example of the Brumby Labor Government working with local residents to plan and deliver innovative local solutions that improve transport in their community.
“I encourage local residents to get behind the trial and make it a huge success,” he said.
