The Penington Awards recognise the contribution of public housing tenants to their local communities and are held as part of Housing Week each year to celebrate the contribution of public and social housing across Victoria.
The Penington is an annual Victorian government award presented to a person or group of people living in public or social housing that has made an outstanding voluntary contribution in their local community.
The Award is named in honour of Frances Penington, Victoria’s first female housing commissioner - one of the early pioneers of community building principles. She changed the way the Housing Commission operated – from managing properties to meeting the needs of the people who lived in them.
