The Brumby Labor Government will provide $10,000 towards the Bendigo Olive and Food Fiesta next month in a bid to promote the local olive industry.
Regional and Rural Development Minister Jacinta Allan said Bendigo had a significant number of olive producers who could use the fiesta as an opportunity to showcase the strengths of the olive industry in central Victoria.
“The festival, to be held at Bendigo Pottery on Sunday 14 March, will include olive and olive oil cooking demonstrations, workshops, and tastings,” she said.
Ms Allan said the festival would have something for everyone.
“It will also promote other local food and wine, making it a must-visit activity for regional and metropolitan Victorians,” she said.
“Bendigo residents can also expect to see locally produced salami, sausages, pasta, wine, coffee, and chocolate.”
Ms Allan said Victoria had a strong olive industry that many people weren’t aware of.
“The Victorian olive industry comprises more than 600 producers who grow half of Australia’s total olive product from up to 3.5 million trees.
“Central Victoria alone produces about 65 per cent of Victoria's total production of olive oil.”
Ms Allan said the Brumby Labor Government was committed to supporting both the industry and regional community events.
“I would like to thank the Rotary Club of Bendigo South for having the vision and enthusiasm to organise this event,” she said.
“We understand the importance of bringing people together in regional and rural communities by supporting strong, well-organised events.
“That’s why we will provide $10,000 from the Provincial Events Program, part of the Brumby Labor Government’s $502 million Moving Forward plan to make regional and rural Victoria the best place to live, work and raise a family.”
