Posted
15 February 2010

The Victorian town of Nagambie is set to hold the National and Interstate Rowing Championships with the help of a $15,000 Brumby Labor Government grant, announced today by the Member for Northern Victoria Region, Candy Broad.

Ms Broad said the National and Interstate Rowing Championships was a prestigious event that would boost the local economy through an estimated 24,000 visitors to the area.

“Nagambie Lakes is recognised as the state’s number one rowing course and the National and Interstate Rowing Championships will not only create a greater awareness of the sport and venue, but also the entire Goulburn Valley Region,” Ms Broad said.

“The historic rowing championships are a prestigious and large scale event which is expected to bring over $8 Million into the local community.”

Ms Broad said the event would also be a wonderful opportunity to support local tourism, the accommodation and food industry and expand on the region’s business and socio-economic growth.

“This occasion will also create casual employment and a large number of volunteers are getting involved in a wonderful example of community spirit,” Ms Broad said.

The 2010 Australian Rowing Championships, including the Interstate Regatta and Victorian Rowing Championships, will take place at the Nagambie Lakes in the Goulburn Valley from March 1 to March 8.

Rowing Victoria is providing $144,000 in funds, rounding out the total project cost of $159,000.

Ms Broad said the Brumby Labor Government’s $15,000 sponsorship of the National and Interstate Rowing Championships would be provided to Rowing Victoria through the Provincial Victoria Local Events Program.

“The Provincial Victoria Local Events Program is helping to finance events that bring business growth and socio-economic development to towns across provincial Victoria,” Ms Broad said.

“It is part of Moving Forward, the Brumby Labor Government’s $502 million plan to make provincial Victoria the best place to live, work, invest and raise a family.

“The Brumby Labor Government is committed to working in partnership with local councils and communities to drive new growth and investment opportunities across provincial Victoria,” Ms Broad said.
