2010 Science Awards Nominations Now Open

Posted
29 June 2010

Agriculture Minister Joe Helper has called on Victorian scientists to come forward and celebrate their work by nominating for a Department of Primary Industries (DPI) 2010 Science Award.

Mr Helper said the awards celebrated and acknowledged excellence in science and innovation, both from within Victoria’s regional communities and our universities.

“Science, innovation and the application of new technologies are central to the future growth and development of the Victorian economy,” Mr Helper said.

“These awards have been presented since 1992 and recognise the important contribution science and innovation make to Victoria’s primary industries.”

Mr Helper said the 2009 winner of the Nancy Millis Postgraduate Award was University of Melbourne student Rebecca Darbyshire.

“Rebecca is undertaking research into the impact on climate change on horticulture in Victoria,” he said.

“Stone and pome fruit trees are responsive to climate, requiring both sufficient cold in winter and warmth in spring to produce a successful crop.

“Her work will provide primary producers with vital information to allow them to adapt their farming practices to meet the challenges and opportunities presented by climate change.”

Mr Helper said the two awards available to the Victorian community were;

  • Hugh McKay Future Farming Award – $10,000 for the most innovative farmer to further their initiative; and
  • Nancy Millis Postgraduate Award – $21,000 over three years for the most talented science graduate to undertake their PhD.

There are also two DPI staff awards available for excellence in both science research and practice change.

Mr Helper said nominations for the 2010 awards closed on Monday August 23, 2010 and winners would be announced at a ceremony in Melbourne in October.
