Extra Protection For Donald Crossing

Posted
21 June 2010

A $500,000 upgrade to the level crossing at Sunraysia Highway, Donald has been completed, improving safety for motorists.

The Member for Northern Victoria Region, Candy Broad MP said the crossing had been upgraded to boost its safety features as part of the Brumby Labor Government’s commitment to improve safety at level crossings across Victoria.

“The Brumby Labor Government is taking action to build on our record investment in rail safety and this crossing previously only had flashing lights prior to its upgrading,” Ms Broad said.

“The crossing now features automatic advanced warning signs, in addition to the existing flashing lights, making it safer for motorists, heavy vehicle drivers and train passengers.

“We have delivered active upgrades to 37 level and pedestrian crossings across the state this financial year as part of our drive to make crossings safer for all road users.

“We are also aiming to install automated advance warning signs at 27 sites and other upgrades to ensure sites are compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.”

“This upgrade is the latest example of our commitment to upgrade crossings across the region to reduce risks for local communities and visitors,” Ms Broad said.

“In the last four financial years we have upgraded over 300 road and pedestrian crossings around Victoria.

Ms Broad said the upgrade of the crossing was good news for locals and visitors but reminded drivers and pedestrians of their responsibilities.

“We are boosting safety measures at hundreds of level crossings across the state but drivers and pedestrians also have to take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others and ensure they use crossings appropriately and obey warning signals,” Ms Broad said.

“I want to remind all Victorians to take care at all level crossings, regardless of their safety features. With trains passing through this particular crossing each day, my message to motorists is just Don’t Risk It!”
