Member for Northern Victoria Region, Candy Broad, said Wodonga’s new $762,000 roundabout at the Melbourne Road and Moorefield Park Drive intersection which was finished last Friday will improve safety and traffic flow.
“This new roundabout is a major safety improvement for this busy intersection and will help people more easily travel through the intersection with less delays,” said Ms Broad.
“The roundabout will also improve visibility and provide people with clear sight of other vehicles.
“Melbourne Road is an important link between Wodonga and the Hume freeway carrying more than 10,000 vehicles each day.
“In the five years to December 2009 there were two serious injury crashes and five minor injury crashes at this intersection. The roundabout will now help to reduce the number of crashes at this site.
“Roundabouts can reduce fatality and serious injury crashes by up to 85 per cent at some intersections because motorists have to significantly reduce their speed when approaching and travelling through an intersection.
“Final landscaping works are now all that are left to do.
“This $762,000 project was funded under the Safer Roads Program, a key element of the arrive alive road safety strategy which is a Brumby Labor Government initiative to tackle the road toll and aims to reduce it by 30 per cent by 2017.”
“Roads are a key to Victoria’s economic and social development, connecting our towns and suburbs, ensuring efficient freight movement and creating jobs.
“The Brumby Labor Government is delivering improved transport links to enhance tourism, make freight operations more efficient and deliver a better transport system for all Victorians,” Ms Broad said.
“I thank drivers for their patience during the works while these important road safety improvements were taking place. Also I want to remind them to drive carefully until the final vegetation works have been completed.”
The Brumby Labor Government has spent more than $7.5 billion to improve roads since 1999, including $3 billion for regional and rural Victorian roads.
