Local Heritage Eligible For Grants

Posted
12 July 2010

The Brumby Labor Government’s 2010-11 Heritage Grants program will provide $1.82 million worth of funding for custodians of local heritage places and objects, to conserve and protect Victoria’s heritage, the Member for Northern Victoria Region, Candy Broad announced today.

Ms Broad said this year’s grants would continue the successful Victoria’s Heritage Grants program which recognised the importance of local heritage.

She said the Brumby Labor Government was committed to supporting communities and those who took responsibility for Victoria’s precious heritage.

“The heritage grants support the local custodians who care for our rich heritage and work very hard to share it with the wider community,” Ms Broad  said.

Ms Broad encouraged local heritage custodians to apply for grants for

●          repair and conservation of heritage places and objects

●          interpretation of heritage places and objects

●          local government heritage studies and advice

●          documentation projects.

To date 126 community groups have been supported to help conserve local landmarks and objects, from local halls and mechanics institutes to rotundas and aircraft.  Grants have supported 49 interpretation projects and 88 local museums, historical societies and other caretakers have been assisted to document and manage their collections.  More than 45 local heritage studies have been funded.

The grants are provided for places and objects in the Victorian Heritage Register or included in a Heritage Overlay.  Privately owned places or places operating on a commercial profit, places owned by State Government departments, schools (public or private), TAFEs or Universities are not eligible.

Ms Broad said information brochures and application forms are available for downloading at http://www.dpcd.vic.gov.au/web18/dvcgrants.nsf/headingpagesdisplay/grants+finder
