New student accommodation for Mildura’s clinical training school is boosting access to world class training facilities for medical students studying in regional Victoria, the Member for Northern Victoria Region, Candy Broad said today.
Ms Broad today officially opened new student accommodation for Monash University medical students in Mildura.
“The Brumby Labor Government is taking action to give Victorians a better health system by building new hospitals and hiring more doctors and nurses and that’s why we provided funding towards the new accommodation,” Ms Broad said.
“This new home for students will play a critical role in boosting the future health workforce and increasing the number of health professionals working in rural and regional areas.”
Ms Broad said the Brumby Labor Government provided $1.12 million to build new student accommodation in Mildura and expand the rural clinical school facilities at Mildura Base Hospital.
“The clinical school expansion includes a clinical skills laboratory, student lounge and study area as well as teaching and office space,” she said.
“The new student accommodation, located between the Mildura town centre and the hospital, includes two three-bedroom houses and a two-bedroom unit.
“These facilities are now used by medical students on long-term placement, which is at least one university semester and can be up to a year at any one time.”
The Commonwealth Government provided $1.7 million to the Mildura Base Hospital Rural Clinical School facility renovations.
Ms Broad said the expansion of the clinical school at the Mildura Base Hospital would boost student numbers and world-class teaching programs.
“Students from the Monash University medical course undertake clinical training at this site, including up to 30 students at any one time,” she said.
“Monash University also has additional accommodation facilities in Mildura for students on short-term placements, including a number of rental properties and a 10-bedroom residence on the Mildura Base Hospital site.”
Ms Broad said the Brumby Labor Government had committed $53 million over four years to build infrastructure for medical education in public hospitals and health care facilities across Victoria, including here in Mildura.
