Regional Victorians Cash In On Water Saving

Posted
15 July 2010

Regional Victorians should not be misled by the Liberal/National Coalition who are trying to deprive households from getting cash back for saving water.

Liberal and National MP’s have claimed that regional Victorians are not eligible for rebates on water saving products like rainwater tanks, dual flush toilets and showerheads.

Water Minister Tim Holding said this couldn’t be further from the truth with more than 60,000 water saving rebates and 45,000 free showerheads given to regional Victorians.

“Ted Baillieu and the Liberal/National Coalition have once again showed they cannot be trusted on water issues. They have shown they do not understand real Victorians,” Mr Holding said.

“There are about 500 towns across the State that are supplied with water from a water corporation and these residents are eligible to receive rebates.

“I would encourage these households to get out and buy water saving products and claim a rebate from their next water bill.”

“The 280,000 rebates for water saving products statewide have helped reduce water use by almost 3 billion litres a year.”

Mr Holding said the Water Smart Gardens and Homes Rebate Scheme is open to Victorians who are connected to a reticulated water supply system and billed by a water corporation either in Melbourne or regional Victoria.

“Victorian families are doing their bit by restricting their water use and the Brumby Labor Government is taking the tough decisions to drought proof the State,” he said.

“Our record investment in water projects like the Wimmera-Mallee Pipeline, the Goldfields Superpipe and Food Bowl Modernisation Project are providing water security for growing regional communities.”

Under the Water Smart Gardens and Homes Rebate Scheme households can receive:

  • $1000 for a large rainwater tank connected to the toilet and laundry;
  • $100 for a dual flush toilet;
  • $500 for a greywater system;
  • $10 or $20 for a water efficient showerhead; and
  • $30 rebate for $100 worth of water saving products.
