Victorians wanting to improve their job opportunities by learning new skills with local organisations received a boost today, with the Brumby Labor Government providing $900,000 in grants for 22 Community Learning Partnerships (CLP) projects.
Visiting the office of Langwarrin Positive Youth Learning Pathways project as part of Community Cabinet on Monday, Skills and Workforce Participation Minister Bronwyn Pike said the funding would improve local employment, education and training options.
“The 22 projects link learners and businesses with Adult Community Education (ACE) providers,” Ms Pike said.
“The projects that will receive the grants include support for Indigenous youth in the Wimmera Hub to develop skills by building a Ute for a motorsport competition and partnerships with owners and employees working in a retail shopping strip in the City of Whitehorse to improve work skills.
“The Brumby Labor Government is investing in community projects so people can learn skills they need to get the jobs they want.
“Our investment in the 22 projects will allow ACE providers to work with local businesses, schools, councils and the community to tailor education and training programs to local needs.”
Ms Pike said the Langwarrin Positive Youth Learning Pathways project received a $50,000 grant as part of the CLP funding boost.
“This project is a great example of how ACE providers adapt their programs and projects to local needs,” Ms Pike said.
“In the City of Frankston, around a third of young people leave school at Year 10 or earlier and we know that early school leavers in the region can find it challenging to find on-going employment.
“Through the Positive Youth Learning Pathways project the Langwarrin Community Centre will work with Peninsula Youth Connections; Frankston City Council; local employment networks, and the Victorian Government to identify and understand the aspirations of young people disengaged from education.
“This project will identify opportunities and programs to train and prepare young school leavers for the transition into employment.”
Ms Pike said since 2006, the Brumby Labor Government had invested more than $4.7 million to support 134 CLP projects in 92 communities across 51 local government areas.
“Through the CLP projects, we are investing in Victorians to obtain further training or gain employment because everyone deserves the support they need to fulfil their potential,” she said.
