As the Baillieu Government gets set to celebrate its first anniversary, health professionals are all saying the same thing - Victoria’s health system has “never been as bad as this” - the Shadow Minister for Health, Gavin Jennings, said today.
Mr Jennings said one year of government under Mr Baillieu had produced a health system in crisis, with nurses on strike, ambulance response times at record lows, blow outs in elective surgery waiting times and hospital emergency departments stretched to breaking point.
“In 12 months, the Baillieu Government has done nothing to grow or improve our health system to provide Victorians with the care they need,” Mr Jennings said.
“Mr Baillieu has not added one extra doctor, one extra nurse or one extra hospital bed – and has abandoned its promise to deliver an extra 100 hospital beds this year.
“He can’t even say how many elective surgeries will be performed in the hospital system this year.
“The only action the Premier has taken is to cut almost $500 million from the health sector over the next four years.”
Mr Jennings said Mr Baillieu was running a Qantas-style industrial relations campaign to demonise nurses and slash nurse to patient ratios.
“Mr Baillieu considers it a reasonable option to lock nurses out of their hospitals and use a strike breaking workforce to end industrial action by nurses to protect working conditions and quality patient care,” he said.
“If Mr Baillieu has his way, a further $100 million could be cut from the health budget each year, meaning the equivalent of 1758 nurses will be cut from Victoria’s health system.”
Mr Jennings said Mr Baillieu had also failed to fulfil a number of health election promises including:
- A Monash Children’s Hospital for families in Melbourne’s south-east;
- A new Royal Victorian Eye andEarHospital;
- A Ballarat helipad;
- A fully-funded second hospital forGeelong; and
- Full funding for upgrades to Box Hill,Bendigo, Castlemaine andSeymourhospitals.
To mark the Baillieu Government's first anniversary, the State Labor Opposition has launched a new website and booklet outlining the many failures of the Baillieu Government.
